Why it matters on this exam

The smallest area, but its questions are conceptual and quick to get right once you know the relationships.

Key concepts (ACS Task IV.A)

• Weight: exceeding the manufacturer's maximum takeoff weight reduces climb, endurance and control margin; the aircraft plus payload must stay under 55 lb to remain under Part 107.
• Center of gravity: a CG outside limits (e.g., a camera mounted far forward) reduces stability and controllability; balance the payload as the manufacturer specifies.
• Load factor: in a level turn, load factor = 1 / cos(bank). At 60° bank the aircraft must generate 2× its weight in lift; steep turns near max weight can exceed structural or thrust limits.
• Performance effects: high density altitude, high weight and cold batteries all reduce available performance and endurance.
• Stability: a well-balanced aircraft returns toward its trimmed attitude; a tail-heavy loading tends to be less stable in pitch.

Common mistakes

• Assuming a heavier aircraft flies the same in wind: it needs more thrust to hold position, cutting endurance.
• Ignoring that load factor rises with bank angle even at constant speed.

Worked example

A 30° bank increases load factor to 1.15; a 60° bank doubles it. Planning aggressive turns with a heavy payload at high density altitude stacks three penalties.
